PFATS: Question & Answer
Do you know of any evidence for wearing neck rolls post-concussion as a preventative measure against future concussions?

To my knowledge there has been no evidence of reducing the risk or preventing future concussions through the use of neck rolls or collars. However, if a player is diagnosed with a cervical type injury, the use of a neck collar might be justified. In all cases of concussions, a physician should be consulted to examine the athlete for all possible injuries to the head and neck area and to determine the best course of treatment.
The use of a properly fitted helmet allows for the greatest possibility of preventing or reducing the risk of a concussion. The wearing of a either a custom or a "boil and bite" type mouthpiece may help as well. Immediate care and subsequent clearing of the athlete following a concussion is the most important aspect of returning a player to competition.
